Voici un bien beau disque, même s'il n'est pas le plus facile d'accès. Musique nocturne s'il en est, Paramount vous plongera dans des paysages sonores étranges et familiers à la fois. Une déambulation à base de field recordings, finalement assez cinématographique à sa façon, et d'une grande maîtrise.

Note : In the early morning of September 16th 2006 I rapidly left the country house where I was staying to finish the production of Paramount. It was the culmination of several months work.
I began outlining the album in the fall of 2005 with the objective of describing society and the present while still trying to anchor it to something timeless and continuous that could be linked to any one period in time. Based on a linear schedule of events I then stipulated rules and guidelines for my musical process.
The following months were cursed with severe computer breakdowns which delayed the development of my musical tools. Meanwhile I started working with DAT and devoted the remainder of that spring to work my way through the massive checklist of sound components based on my schedule of events.
In May, I got stuck once again and to be able to continue I was forced to erase large parts of my project that was decelerating the work flow. I abandoned my notes and started working more freely and rapidly along a rough initial topographic sketch, and at the end of the summer the music was almost complete – one comprehensive 30 minute piece.
Early that fall I went out to the countryside to put the final touches to the album. As it turned out, the house where I was staying was haunted, and the spiritual activity increased as the work progressed. Footsteps, doors that suddenly opened, traces of EVP in my recordings and an overall intensed atmosphear affected my appearance in the house. After two weeks I couldn't take it anymore and felt I was about to lose my mind. I packed my equipment and fled. The album was finally finished in Malmoe shortly thereafter, as far as I know without any interference from the spiritual world.

Et leur collaboration s'avère à la hauteur des espérances. Vous le constaterez avec cet album sorti sur Poptones, le label qu'avait créé Alan McGee pour se faire plaisir après avoir vendu Creation.

En attendant que tout rentre dans l'ordre chez Megaupload, on continue avec Mediafire. En tout cas, j'ai bien fait de pas héberger tous mes fichiers chez le même uploader. Ashtraty Boy se partage entre Chicago et l'Australie, et ces racines se ressentent dans la musique. Pour les nostalgiques de rock indé des années 90, c'est un pur bonheur, un petit plaisir pour fans des Go-Betweens, des Bats ou des Feelies entre autres. Sur The Honeymmon Suite, on retrouve une certaine Liz Phair - si ça vous parle encore aujourd'hui.

Note : Ashtray Boy is two indie-pop bands in one: the first existed in Chicago, the other — simultaneously — in Sydney, Australia. Both were led by vocalist Randall Lee, formerly of the Cannanes and Nice; after the latter's 1993 demise, Lee began splitting his time between his native Australia and the U.S., and the first Ashtray Boy line-up formed was the American version, rounded out by future Pulsars member Dave Trumfio and drummer Justin Niimi. Their 1993 full-length The Honeymoon Suite (featuring backing vocals from Liz Phair) was the first release issued under the name, while 1994's Macho Champions featured material from the Chicago unit as well as the Sydney group, which also featured bassist Thomas Tallis and drummer Neil Johnston. Candypants Beach, issued the following year, and 1996's The Everyman's 4th Dimension were also joint ventures from both Ashtray Boy rosters. In 2002, Lee left Australia for Vancouver B.C., where he set about putting together a Canadian line-up as well.
Lee's first Ashtray Boy album, unlike the rest, consisted of one band in one place, namely the Chicago lineup of himself, Niimi and Trumfio. Interestingly, one other member helped out throughout Suite, namely not-yet-famous Liz Phair, a year away from her own solo breakthrough. Together the foursome whipped up a gentle delight that set the tone for future Ashtray Boy efforts, fine if not distinctly unique indie rock that avoided hyperpreciousness thanks to Lee's low-pitched speak-singing and often humorous outlook on love and life. Though sometimes the lyrics aren't the easiest to decipher, all that usually matters is the general vibe, and when things do come clear, it's often pure delight. A good example is the semi-waltz-time "Shirley Maclaine," when in the chorus Lee and Phair sing "Turning on or just tuning out, in a past life we were brussel sprouts." Anything but a novelty song, it's just winsome and fun enough on both hands to work and work well. The album isn't just about clever lyrics, though — when the group stretches out on the lovely coda to "Observatory Hill," Lee's gently mournful guitar work and the rhythm section's soft propulsion combine beautifully. Niimi's drumming is actually one of the underrated points of Ashtray Boy; he's not afraid to get in some harder pounding when needed. It's not stomping Zeppelin bombast or the like, but on numbers like "How Charles Destroyed the Inland Sea," he definitely adds a solid groove where other bands would be more polite. On "Hit," he and Trumfio even kick up a fine R&B/funk snarl. Phair gets in some solo moments to shine, as when she dresses down a creepy if not abusive suitor in "Infidel." Ending with the nice instrumental title track, with some piano as well as everything else, Suite is a fine starting point.

Où l'on retrouve notre groupe chéri, ou presque! En effet, E.Jugend est un projet parallèle de membres de Ma Chérie for Painting. Projet récréatif ou laboratoire, à vous de juger. Ce post-rock part une nouvelle fois dans toutes les directions - ambient ou folk suivant l'humeur dans le même morceau - d'une manière plus déconstruite que chez MCFP, pour ne pas dire plus décousue. Un foisonnement d'idées, qui parfois mériteraient d'être plus abouties, un laboratoire plein de promesses qui ne demanderaient qu'à être tenues. Vous l'aurez compris, avec cet album c'est à vous de faire preuve de curiosité.

Maybe then, at the Technical University festival (including beermug throwing) in times of experienced change of climate. Just like walking barefoot on hot concrete. With a wide grin. Tap-dancin´ on carribean instruments. And in one moment it all dissolves into - nothingness.
Stravinsky, Steve Reich, Sonic Youth, Gas, Godard. Quasi Rubber Soul without Exile On Main Street as basic to do music together. One-take. Or rather: live. Inbetween two acoustic guitars and laptop (featuring strawberry cake in springtime) on the one hand and successful battles of material while supporting 5-piece-bands on the other.

Chris Watson - El Tren Fantasma, The Signal Man's Mix (Touch, 2011)

Le dernier album de Chris Watson risque d'ici peu de se retrouver dans pas mal de bilans de fin d'année. Et ce ne sera que justice, tant cette traversée du Mexique d'Ouest en Est dans un train aujourd'hui disparu - donc un train fantôme - est de toute beauté. Et c'est aussi une surprise, puisque c'est de loin l'album le plus musical de son auteur, ce qui est logique si on considère qu'un train n'est rien d'autre qu'une grosse machine à produire du rythme. Autre nouveauté, cette fois l'album s'accompagne d'un maxi de remixes - une grande première! Mais s'agit-il vraiment de remixes? Plutôt des versions alternatives, un autre mix, où le train lui-même est davantage mis en avant. Et c'est une très bonne idée de nous proposer ces variations sur un maxi, puisque sur la durée d'un album ça aurait été plus convenu et sans doute trop long. Une belle occasion de prolonger un album magique!

Le grand retour de Pinback, suite! Quand je dis ''grand retour'', je me comprends. Après un premier volume sorti au printemps, voici le second. La musique est toujours aussi délicieuse, l'objet toujours aussi impossible à se procurer. Ce coup-ci, c'est sorti pour une version ''black friday'' du record store day : 1700 copies pour les locaux, 200 pour le reste du monde. A un tel niveau, ce n'est plus frustrant, ça devient carrément rageant!

Voici à présent un document historique! Si on retrouvera ces titres - parmi d'autres - sur une compilation CD chez Elektroschock trente ans plus tard, ceci est un document d'époque. Vinyle russe - soviétique en fait! - avec craquements de rigueur, un son monophonique qui n'empêche nullement la musique d'avoir une profondeur de champ inouïe, un document et un monument, à l'image du célèbre ANS Synthesizer utilisé ici. Le nom le plus familier sera probablement celui d'Eduard Artemiev - cf. la bande originale de ''Solaris'' postée ici, mais c'est bien le disque dans son ensemble qui laissera une forte impression.

The National - Black Session (2005)

On ne présente plus le groupe de Matt Berninger... mais je vais y aller de ma petite présentation quand même! The National, c'est le plus grand groupe de rock du monde aux yeux de ceux qui sont trop jeunes pour avoir connu les Pixies à l'époque. Ce qui mettra tout le monde d'accord, c'est cette session de grande classe. Quant à savoir quel serait le plus grand groupe de rock du monde aujourd'hui, j'avoue que je n'ai pas d'idée et qu'aucun nom ne me vient à l'esprit dans l'immédiat. Shrine - Distorted Legends, Pt.1 (Drone Records, 2008)

Shrine est le projet drone/ambient du bulgare Hristo Gospodinov. Le label allemand Drone Records est bien connu des amateurs du genre pour sa longue série de 7'' - une centaine! - ainsi que pour son copieux mail-order. Il est toujours risqué d'intituler un disque ''Part 1'', la preuve à nouveau ici puisqu'à ce jour la ''Part 2'' n'existe toujours pas. Ma description va être injustement banale : c'est du drone nocturne et fantomatique qui vous attend ici, et c'est particulièrement envoûtant! Vu que le résultat s'éloigne des stéréotypes du genre, je regrette d'autant plus qu'il n'y ait pas de suite - pour le moment en tout cas.

A 7" vinyl release that exceeds the limits of the common industrial/drone pattern. Build with tons of artificial sounds, this ep is based on multiple use of distortion effect. Noise fluctuations vs background soundscapes. It's been created in search of the point where harsh music is starting to sound deep and melancholic - 15 mins of true industrial meditation.

Dans sa réédition de ''The Coxcomb'', le label américain Blue Chopsticks avait omis la face B d'origine. Pas grave, Rectangle ayant également réédité ce bien-nommé ''Aux Noctambules'' sur un mini-CD. Ici, David Grubbs s'essaie au drone, mais contrairement à son ancien complice Jim O'Rourke il garde sa sensibilité pop  - quand chez le second la pop n'est qu'un terrain d'expérimentation musicale parmi d'autres. Chaleureux!

David Grubbs - The Coxcomb (Blue Chopsticks, 2000)

Deux pour le prix d'un. On ne gagne pas à tous les coups : après le split d'Oasis les deux frères se sont senti obligés de sortir chacun un album pour montrer qui était le vrai moteur du groupe. Dans le cas de Gastr del Sol, on a eu largement plus de chance, les carrières solo respectives de David Grubbs et Jim O'Rourke étant jalonnées de disques remarquables. En 1998, David Grubbs sortait ''The Coxcomb'' en vinyle sur le label français Rectangle, très belle transcription musicale d'une nouvelle, où il se trouvait fort bien accompagné. En 2000, Blue Chopsticks avait la bonne idée de rééditer l'objet, en y adjoignant une autre pièce (Avocado Orange), mais en oubliant la face B originale de The Coxcomb. Allez comprendre...

Note : After the country-inflected minimalism of The Thicket, David Grubbs -- evidently "wanting to be taken seriously as an avant-garde man," to quote his former partner in Gastr del Sol, Jim O'Rourke -- teams up with French musicians from Noël Akchoté and Quentin Rollet's Rectangle label. The title track is a 17-minute setting of Stephen Crane's short story The Blue Hotel (which Grubbs sketched out while waiting for his plane to Paris). One wonders whether he could have made better use of the phenomenal talents of improvisers Theirry Madiot, Yves Robert, and Didier Petit had he had more time. The B-side, "Aux Noctambules," is a drone-based composition featuring Grubbs on a plastic reed organ with discreet contributions from Rectangle house guitarist Noël Akchoté. "The Coxcomb" sets salient extracts from the original Crane over a recurring melodic and harmonic refrain and resists the temptation to explode into violence -- unlike the protagonist in the story. Grubbs' admiration for Mayo Thompson and the Red Krayola aesthetic that "any text can go with any music" is reflected both in his word setting and in his choice of the Red Krayola's Stephen Prina as the narrator. Another mentor, Tony Conrad, comes to mind when listening to "Aux Noctambules," though instead of his gritty violin, there is instead the unnerving (and occasionally pitch-unstable) reed organ. Akchoté's normally ebullient guitar is confined here to sketching in the harmonic background, curiously recalling John McLaughlin's delicate arpeggios on Miles Davis' In a Silent Way. Un superbe mini-album de covers signé David Pajo, dans la même veine que le maxi proposé récemment - donc du folk à pleurer dans la veine du regretté Elliott Smith. Des reprises? Oui, et qui plus est des reprises de Glenn Danzig des Misfits, qui entre les mains de l'ex-Slint et Tortoise subissent le même traitement que celles d'AC/DC revues par Mark Kozelek - à savoir qu'elles en sortent transfigurées. Je le redis, le résultat est superbe.

Experimental cover albums generally tend to disappoint. Usually an artist’s motives for interpretation are sound, yet the final product is rarely impressive, often belittling the original work. Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon), known for his “interpretive covers,” has reconstructed a myriad of works ranging from Francis Scott Key’s “The Star Spangled Banner,” to various AC/DC tracks, to an entire collection of Modest Mouse songs (Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities). The problem with Kozelek’s covers, as with others who compose hyper-experimental covers, is that frankly, no one really cares. All he really did (and this is no knock on Kozelek’s earlier work like Down Colorful Hill, just his questionable later years) was write a completely unrelated song with his own trademark musical style. Then instead of writing lyrics that could tie a noose around any listener’s neck, he used the author’s original ones…obviously.
Unlike Kozelek’s frequent use of “poetic license,” David Pajo’s relatively unknown, vinyl only release, Scream With Me, finds a tolerable balance between interpretation and reiteration. As you’ve probably guessed, the record takes a rather sobering look at a collection of songs from the original Kings of the Underworld, The Misfits.
Pajo is probably the most important guitarist since the late 80s, and even though this record doesn’t really add to his impressive resumé (Slint – Spiderland & Tweez, Tortoise – Millions Now Living Will Never Die & TNT, Royal Trux – 3 Song EP), it does serve as an intriguing work.
Anyways, if you the thought 3-chord punk couldn’t be simplified any further, then you’ve been misled. Pajo takes punk’s musical manifesto and turns it into very simple lo-fi acoustic jams. Pajo follows the chordal tonality of each song, then turning the power chords into natural chords more suitable for the tenderness of plucking and finger picking. Pajo’s feeble vocals could bother some, but they are pleasantly human.
You’re not going to find a whole lot of progressive jazz riffs, piercing harmonics, spastic time signatures or anything else that made Pajo a Louisville legend, but there is a great way to enjoy this album: build a camp fire deep within your local wilderness destination, crack open a few cold ones and indulge in one of the most epic sing-a-longs courtesy of Pajo.

Chrysta Bell - This Train (La Rose Noire, 2011)

Cette belle plante est une protégée de David Lynch, qui a réalisé cet album - à défaut de réaliser un nouveau film! On y retrouve les climats qu'affectionne l'auteur de Twin Peaks et Sailr & Lula. On y trouve des langueurs, des longueurs aussi. Lorsque cet artiste multi-facettes s'attaque à la musique il perd de son étrangeté, devient bien plus ''mainstream-friendly''. Par politesse, on ne lui signalera pas que dans le genre Portished avait déjà tout dit il y a dix ans, et on savourera quelques grands moments, tel l'inaugural morceau This Train. En tout cas, cet album reste pour moi bien plus réussi que le nouveau disque de David Lynch lui-même, qui non content de normaliser et banaliser son univers manque sévèrement de chansons solides - ce qui n'est fort heureusement pas le cas ici.

David Lynch, lord and master of strange cinema and curious futurisms, has found a dark new voice to mold and craft for the early 21st century. This wouldn't be the first time he's taken a direct role in shaping sonic identities as a producer either: some of you might be aware of one of his earlier musical collaborators from his time in and around Twin Peaks, the sumptuous queen of space pop Julee Cruise and her fantastic debut outing Floating Into The Night from 1990.
Miss Bell here, however is an entirely different animal than most dream poppers, though not unlike Cruise as far as pace goes. She's skittery, tense, arresting as hell vocally and an intriguing complementary to the musical angles of dubstep and the dread heralding of early 90's Nick Cave. And when it works, it'll knock your friggin' face off: tracks like 'Bird Of Flames', for example, sounds like something Scott Walker locked up in his garage for a few decades before handing off the mix to Burial.
All in all, this is a gorgeous debut effort that evokes plenty of positive comparison with past post-punk and dream pop icons without sounding like any particular one of them, and feels refreshing as hell compared to a lot of what gets touted around on the singer-songwriter front these days.

Après leur split avec Tony Conrad, voici un autre single - plus accessible - de Gastr del Sol, l'ancien duo formé de David Grubbs et Jim O'Rourke. Une musique qui puise ses racines dans le folk de John Fahey, avec aussi quelques pointes plus expérimentales et des coups de sang, le tout sur le généralement plus ouvertement pop label Teenbeat, et avec une bien belle pochette.

Beach House. Comme ça, sans raison particulière, simplement pour me faire plaisir - après tout avoir un blog ça sert aussi à ça. Et qui sait, certains parmi vous auront peut-être snobé le duo de Victoria Legrand et Alex Scally pour cause de presse trop unanime et dithyrambique. Ou bien le duo se sera retrouvé noyé au milieu des centaines d'autres sorties et de choses à télécharger/écouter. Si c'est sur Teen Dream qu'on trouvera leur sublime chanson ''Norway'', c'est leur album précédent - le second - que je poste ici aujourd'hui.  Peu de différences, mais Devotion est un peu plus délicat que son successeur - ce qui expliquera ma préférence.

Prefab Sprout - Live at Reading University (1985)

Pour certains, Prefab Sprout est trop lisse, trop produit, trop propre, trop mainstream pour qu'un amateur de rock indépendant digne de ce nom laisse ce groupe s'installer dans son Panthéon personnel. Je n'ai jamais compris comment on pouvait résister à Paddy McAloon. Trop grand public pour le petit monde indé, et trop sophistiqué pour avoir un succès commercial d'envergure - encore une preuve du peu d'impact de la critique sur les chiffres de ventes. Ce live les saisit à l'époque de l'album Steve McQueen, leur premier chef d'oeuvre, et franchement, ''When Love Breaks Down'' est digne des plus belles pages des Go-Betweens ou des Pale Fountains.

De temps en temps je poste quelques disques d'exotica et d'easy listening, comme des bulles nostalgiques et insouciantes. Des bibelots toc peut-être, mais un charme qui rafraîchit néanmoins. Et avec celui-ci, signé par un japonais installé à Hawaï, on rejoint ma thématique des albums de reprises le temps du dernier titre. Un peu de politique... et de musique aussi.

Bonjour. N'ayez crainte, je reviens très vite à la musique, mais là je suis obligé de parler de politique. Les décisions scandaleusement scandaleuses de notre gouvernement français deviennent de plus en plus scandaleuses. Cela doit cesser! Ainsi: les retraites! Aujourd'hui, une seule pension de retraite ne suffit plus, et les retraités doivent retourner au boulot pour survivre! Une honte! C'est proprement scandaleux!
Par exemple, voici un article que j'ai lu aujourd'hui et que je vous recopie pour celles et ceux qui ne liraient pas Popnews:

'' Après sa retraite (anticipée, aux yeux et aux oreilles de beaucoup) en août dernier et la fin de son émission "C'est Lenoir" sur France Inter, on imagine que Lenoir broyait du noir à Biarritz, sans caresses et bise à l'oeil. Ce temps est peut-être révolu, car d'après Libération, l'animateur se préparerait à refaire son apparition avec ces célèbres Black Session sur la petite soeur rock de France Inter, le Mouv. Les concerts seraient enregistrés dans une salle de concert parisienne, puis diffusés à l'antenne du Mouv, et ça commencerait d'ici la fin de l'année. A suivre !

Laura J. Martin & The Simonsound - Inside your Bones (Battered Ornaments, 2011)

Ce n'est qu'un single, huit minutes de musique et puis s'en va, mais quel single! Et quel contraste, aussi. Laura J. Martin nous livre un délicieux moment de folk, voix douce, orchestration boisée avec flûte et harpe. Et à côté de cette merveille, le remix signé The Simonsound sonne comme du DJ Shadow de la grande époque - et c'est une tuerie. Si j'avais une rubrique ''single of the week'' celui-ci y trouverait sa place, mais comme j'écoute peu de singles on peut même parler de single du mois. Single de l'année? On n'est pas encore à l'heure des bilans, mais ces deux titres sont bien placés sur la ligne!

Carter Burwell - Raising Arizona / Blood Simple (Varese, 1987)

Voici les bandes originales des deux premiers films des frères Coen signées par leur fidèle compagnon de route Carter Burwell. En écoutant les titres de ''Raising Arizona'' (ou Arizona Junior en français), difficile de voir qu'il s'agit d'une comédie déjantée et trépidante. Quant à ''Blood Simple'' (Sang pour Sang), leur premier long-métrage se jouant avec virtuosité des codes du film noir, c'est un de leurs plus beaux films, une réussite qu'ils n'égaleront qu'avec ''Fargo'' dix ans plus tard - sur le mode grand-guignol cette fois, et qu'ils ne dépasseront qu'avec ''No country for the old man'', chef d'oeuvre d'une noirceur absolue mais où la musique est pratiquement absente. Et si ''Blood Simple'' est une de leurs réussites majeures, sa musique est également un des sommets de Carter Burwell. J'ai bien peur qu'on y perde en écoutant la musique sans les images, mais le thème au piano - sublime - de ''Blood Simple'' justifie à lui seul le téléchargement.

Benoit Pioulard - Clear (self-released, 2001)

Le dernier disque de Benoit Pioulard est resté plusieurs jours dans un coin de mon disque dur avant que je trouve le courage d'y jeter une oreille. Pourquoi? Parce qu'un disque qui s'intitule ''Benoît Honoré Pioulard Plays Thelma'', avec son fort potentiel prétentieux et pompier, ça ne me fait pas franchement envie! J'ai eu tort de me méfier, à l'écoute c'est dans une veine néo-classique, même si déjà entendu mille fois déjà par ailleurs, et je n'y retrouve pas ce qui fait d'habitude le charme de son auteur. Alors on va faire un bond de dix ans en arrière. J'avais déjà posté le très expérimental ''Dakota/Housecoat'', voici un autre de ses premiers pas autoproduits, dans une veine cette fois-ci davantage post-rock. On s'en doute, c'est aujourd'hui une rareté!

Dump - That Skinny Motherfucker with the High Voice? (Shrimper, 1998)

J'espère que vous apprécierez l'effort. Dans ma thématique de reprises je cherche à m'éloigner des albums de covers trop prévisibles. Après Henk Hofstede qui rend hommage à Cohen, voici un autre album peu connu qui dépasse lui aussi largement la simple curiosité. Pourtant, au départ c'est loin d'être évident! Dump était le projet récréatif de James McNew, bassiste de Yo La Tengo au civil. Le lien avec Prince ne saute pas aux yeux : McNew est blanc, binoclard, fait plus d'un mètre vingt, et on ne peut pas dire qu'il transpire particulièrement le sexe puisqu'il ressemble surtout à ce qu'il est - le bassiste sympa d'un groupe indé. Pourtant le résultat va vous épater. Si on ne connait pas les versions originales, on ne devinerait même pas qu'il s'agit à la base de chansons de Prince, ça sonne surtout comme du Yo La Tengo à la cool. C'était d'abord sorti en cassette, devenant une espèce de mini-hit underground, avant d'être réédité en CD avec quelques bonus bienvenus.

Shrimper has reissued James McNew's self-produced cassette tape of Prince covers and added five additional songs. Featuring a title gleamed from the Black Album track "Bob George" ("Who?/Prince?/Ain't that a bitch?/That skinny motherf*cker with the high voice?"), this album demonstrates McNew's creative and varied approach to both famous and lesser-known songs. "1999" features his understated vocals and Stereolab's Morgane Lhote on Farfisa, "When U Were Mine" features McNew's low-register vocals and his own glistening keyboards, "Pop Life" features him harmonizing off-key with his multi-tracked self, "Dirty Mind" features his ominously echoed vocals, and "The Beautiful Ones" features his attempt to emulate Prince's own vocal style, including a switch to falsetto. McNew tries to transform "Erotic City" into a swaggering indie rock number, but doesn't quite pull it off; his vocals don't quite mesh with the musical backing on "Girls + Boys" and his whispered, portentous interpretation of "A Love Bizarre" is interesting at first but lasts too long. He fares better with an acoustic performance of "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?" (originally the B-side of Prince's "1999") and a rendition of "An Honest Man" that is somewhat reminiscent of Neil Young and Lambchop. "Raspberry Beret" is propelled by handclaps and reverb-laden guitar to be one of the better tracks on the album; McNew even changes "She wasn't too bright" to "I think she knew that I wasn't too bright," although he keeps the most dubious part of the lyrics ("Built like she was/She had the nerve to ask me/If I planned to do her any harm"). The album's concluding track, "Another Lonely Christmas," provides further evidence that McNew is adept at finding the emotional core of Prince's songs; McNew isn't as good a performer as Prince, of course, but he does find ways to make listeners hear some of the news in new and compelling ways. So while this album isn't flawless, it is definitely more than just a recycling of someone else's songs. (All Music Guide)

Harold Budd - In the Mist (Darla, 2011)

Actif depuis une trentaine d'années, Harod Budd n'a plus grand chose à prouver, et ce n'est pas avec cet album qu'il va fondamentalement se renouveler. Mais qui s'en plaindra? Dans le registre piano ambient il reste une référence, et on sait qu'un nouvel album signé Harold Budd a peu de risques de décevoir - pas comme Brian Eno par exemple. Et dans le genre, il renvoie à leurs chères études une grande partie des musiciens auto-complaisants qui encombrent le marché avec leurs albums  néo-classiques inconséquents et interchangeables. Preuve supplémentaire de la maîtrise d'Harold Budd, si en elle-même l'utilisation du violon n'a rien d'originale son apparition sur l'album reste saisissante dans son effet. Alors il est comment, le Harold Budd cuvée 2011? C'est un bon cru, je dirai.

Kiyoko Itoh - 23 Ji no Onna (Toshiba, 1971)

C'est dans ce genre de disques que Tarantino va chercher les musiques de ses films. D'ailleurs, avec le temps, la musique finit par être la seule chose qu'on retienne de ses films - parce que niveau mise en scène et direction d'acteurs il y avait quand même de méchantes chutes de tension dans son Inglorious Bastards, mais ceci est une autre histoire et une question de goûts. Bref! Le vinyle original est un Graal, les rééditions CD sont presque aussi difficiles à se procurer  - à prix décent? vous rêvez! - et la musique est délicieusement datée, pop et cinématographique. Son érotisme bien inoffensif aujourd'hui ne l'empêche pas de garder son pouvoir de séduction intact.

Note : Deliriously mega rare and hardly known Itoh Kiyoko record. Normally if you want to score a copy of the original vinyl you are required to donate most of your vital organs to some yakuza-typed black marketer, but luckily enough, this one here is easier to attain without ripping out a lung or a liver to pound off. This was the final album Itoh recorded in 1971 and on this effort she got backed up by again a bunch of Tokyo underground heavy weights such as J.A. Seazer and Kuni Kawauchi of the Happenings Four. On this album, Itoh's talent is fully flowering and apart from merely eargasmatic songs she hushes into being, atmospheric city-life field recordings and sound snippets find their way in and between her compositions. These flashes of cosmopolitan Tokyo city life grandeur and the feeling of desperate desolation it tails along elevate her impeccable melancholic love ballads and softly erotic excursions to even higher levels of artistic expression, catapulting the whole affair towards eerie stratospheric heavenly delightful realms. Sadly enough, both of her albums failed to catch on, not poppy enough, too melancholic, way too creative, artistically too advanced, hard to categorize and probably even too erotically sophisticated without degrading herself to mere carnal sonic one hit wonders. In one word, a delicate soft psychedelic wonderland avenue of an album that will entrap simple airhead listeners into deadlock without giving them the chance to fully explore the absinthial pleasures it conceals. If one only cares to listen to what lies underneath its surface layer, a new form of aural addiction will commence to besiege you. One of the greatest underrated delicate psychedelic female vocal albums to seep out of Japan. Original copies just never surface and if they do, you have to trade in a limb to take one home with you.

Mark Kozelek - 7 Songs Belfast (Caldo Verde, 2008)

On reste - au moins un petit peu - dans la thématique de la semaine avec ce titre de Mark Kozelek. J'ai déjà dit ce que je pensais du parcours de l'ex-leader des Red House Painters lors d'un précédent post. Il se laisse vivre sur ses acquis, comme s'il était incapable de retrouver l'inspiration de ses débuts. Sun Kil Moon c'est pas mal, et ses albums live - de reprises de ses propres titres ou d'AC/DC - font toujours leur petit effet. Mais il se repose sur ses anciennes compositions - et sur sa voix - en donnant l'impression qu'il n'essaie même plus de renouer avec ses anciens sommets. Ceci dit, je fais le difficile! Sur ce live, seul avec sa guitare et ses classiques, le charme opère toujours et le frisson n'est jamais loin. Alors même s'il ne fait que ça, ce ''que ça'' restera toujours largement au dessus de la mêlée.

Je ne vous détaillerai pas le contenu de cette compilation caritative - pas même pour déplorer qu'Hypnolovewell soit un groupe injustement oublié de nos jours - puisque le premier titre emporte à lui seul le morceau. Vous ferez ce que vous voudrez avec les autres participants, mais si cette cover de Plastic Bertrand ne se retrouve pas dans votre i-machine je n'y comprends plus rien!

Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Leslie Keffer - Gordon Moore Keffer (Ecstatic Peace!, 2008)

Tout arrive cette année. Lenoir qui prend sa retraite, ce n'est pas vraiment une surprise. Mais le couple de Sonic Youth qui se sépare après trente ans de vie commune, on s'y attendait moins. C'est leur stricte vie privée, ça ne nous regarde pas, mais la nouvelle aura fait le tour du net, attristant beaucoup de gens - que l'évènement ne concerne pourtant en rien et qui ne verront pas leur vie changée d'un iota par ce divorce. Que voulez-vous, Kim Gordon vieillit, Thurston Moore enregistre des albums solo acoustiques et pantouflards produits par Beck, et au fait à quand remonte le dernier disque de Sonic Youth que j'ai vraiment écouté avec intérêt? Sur cette cassette, le couple était déjà  - musicalement! - séparé, chacun se partageant une face bruitiste en compagnie de Leslie Keffer.

Pajo / Audrey - Split (Stereo Test Kit, 2006)

Slint, Tortoise, The For Carnation, King Kong, des coups de main à Interpol, Will Odham ou Billy Corgan, le C.V. de David Pajo impressionne. Sur deux titres ici - qui me semblent être exclusifs à ce maxi - on le retrouve en mode folk à pleurer (ou en mode Elliott Smith si vous préférez). En sa compagnie, un groupe féminin plus rock, ce qui n'est pas une mauvaise idée puisqu'elles auraient eu du mal à rivaliser avec David Pajo dans le même registre que lui.

L'ombre du label Sarah plane sur ce tribute album, ce qui est normal puisqu'il est dédié à Keith Girdler, musicien de Bristol entre autres membre de Blueboy, emporté par un cancer en 2007. Entre The Wake, Blueboy, Louis Philippe ou The Clientele, on est en - très - bonne compagnie.

Et ce troisième post pour clore - provisoirement? - notre série de picture discs. C'est pas tout ça, mais j'ai des albums de reprises à classer, moi! Fennesz n'est plus à présenter, lui qui a ouvert les musiques expérimentales à un plus large public avec son classique ''Endless Summer''. Toujours son travail de guitare subtil et scintillant. La particularité de ce vinyle monoface, c'est qu'on peut choisir la vitesse à laquelle on l'écoute. Vous trouverez donc ici les deux versions, tout le monde sera content!

Ian Nagoski - Violets for your Furs (Edition . . ., 2003)

Dans le prolongement direct du précédent message, un nouveau picture disc, une nouvelle plongée dans le monde du drone, ces masses sonores qui semblent statiques mais qui s'avèrent en mouvement perpétuel et au fort pouvoir hypnotique pour qui accepte de s'y abandonner. Et un mot sur l'objet, puisqu'il s'agit d'un vinyle. A première vue, il ne paye pas de mine : un simple disque même pas coloré livré dans une pochette transparente, c'est vraiment le minimum! Ceux qui aiment explorer les livrets ou déchiffrer les notes de pochette seront déçus. Mais la seule chose à regarder, c'est le disque lui-même. Le regarder tourner, c'est voir la musique prendre forme. Et dans le domaine du drone, le picture disc n'est plus un simple objet qui ''fait joli'', il prend tout son sens et ouvre une nouvelle dimension. Immersion garantie!

Beautiful picture disc LP featuring two full-color reproductions of visual works by Rick Reed and two new side-long solo compositions.
Reed's fascinating, highly evolved world is represented well by these two new pieces, each of which offers up the kind of droning intensity and unsettling beauty that this veteran noisemaker has come to be known for. Reed's work is very obviously that of an experienced craftsman - one whose sound is a reverent nod to early electronic music underscored by an enduring sensibility for atmosphere and ethereality.
Dreamz began life as the soundtrack for a live visual display by filmmaker Ken Jacobs, which was performed live by Jacobs and Reed at the 2007 New York Film Festival. The record’s flipside, Blue Polz, was also inspired by the work of a filmmaker (originally conceived as a kind of alternate soundtrack to a piece by Fred Worden). All of the music was created using an EMS Synthi A, plus 2 sine wave generators and a shortwave radio.
The artwork comes from two original paintings. Reed has been active in the visual arts for more than 20 years; his work is utterly abstract, beautifully enigmatic. These images are the perfect accompaniment to Reed’s otherworldly audio counterparts.
In addition to his solo work, Rick Reed has participated in a number of productive collaborations over the years with Keith Rowe, Jgrzinich (in Frequency Curtain), the Abrasion Ensemble, and SIRSIT. He currently resides in Austin.
This picture disc LP has been released in an edition of 260 copies.

Le duo de Robin Saville et Antony Ryan est également un petit trésor des musiques électroniques, heureusement moins caché que Bola. Chez Isan, on a l'impression que les machines prennent vie, et s'amusent dès que les humains ont le dos tourné. Sons analogiques, mélodies astucieuses et souvenirs de l'enfance, ce single est un vrai délice. L'essentiel de leurs albums se trouve sur le label allemand Morr Music, le refuge le plus évident qui soit pour eux. Ludique et délicieux!

Bola - Live @ Lichtfabriek Haarlem (bootleg, 2003)

Bola est un des secrets les mieux gardés de l'IDM. Darrell Fitton est ingénieur du son chez Skam, et c'est sur ce label qu'il sort tous ses albums, aux pochettes aussi organiques que mystérieuses. Sur Warp, il aurait eu davantage de visibilité, mais l'ombre lui convient mieux, à l'image de sa musique, qui évolue sur le versant le plus sous-marin et mélancolique des Boards of Canada. Pour tout vous dire, même si les deux premiers albums de Boards of Canada sur Warp sont des classiques insurpassables, je préfère le travail plus intime de Bola. J'ai bien conscience que la prise de son ''sous le manteau'' de ce bootleg ne lui rend pas totalement  justice, mais sa rareté - dont vous n'avez pas idée! - justifie de le proposer ici. En quelques clics, vous trouverez sans trop de peine ses albums Soup, Fyuti ou Gnayse - Soup étant le premier et le plus déchirant.

Broadcast & The Focus Group - Familiar Shapes and Noises (Ghost Box, 2010)

Broadcast, qui s'était montré encore plus discret que d'habitude, était revenu en 2009 avec un intriguant album en collaboration avec The Focus Group - un des piliers du label Ghost Box. L'album, intitulé Broadcast & the Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age, est un de ces disques à part que je vous recommande chaudement. Procurez-vous-le par tous les moyens - même légaux si nécessaire! La collaboration se poursuivra sur ce single dans sa continuité directe. Hélas, une pneumonie fulgurante viendra mettre un terme définitif à l'aventure.
