Roland P. Young - Istet Serenade (EM Records, 2009)
Roland P. Young
Istet Serenade
CD EM Records EM1087 (Japan, 2009)
01. Twirling
02. Curls
03. Dearest
04. Wetness
05. Eclipse
06. Night Air
07. Airlessly
08. Dessert Cave
09. Chrome
10. Tea Bells
Note : 30 years since “Isophonic Boogie Woogie”, Em Records proudly presents Roland P. Young’s “Istet Serenade” – his first original material in as many years.
A foray into the area of music space that represents the core of Roland?s sound philosophy, ‘Isophonics’. The theory of composed improvisation of stillness in the fluidity of constant change. The thingness of actualized sound in the nothingness of acoustic evaporation and recreation from the source of the indwelling presence. This occurs at a speed which defies conscious comprehension but which reveals abundant spiritual revelatory aspects.
To quote mr Young: “The 10 pieces were chosen from 55 comprovisations created over the past year. My Travels to and playing in the atmospheres of Israel, Prague, Rome, London, Paris, Istanbul and Santa Fe, New Mexico combined with my formative years in Kansas City, Missouri then my years in the Bay Area of Northern California and my current residence in Brooklyn, New York inform my music with ever expanding inspirations and creative possibilities.”
This is a sound that is thusly described as spaced acid drones of intense acoustic chill, embracing electronic, ambient, world, avant garde, cosmic, free and chamber jazz music.

David Linx & Diederik Wissels & Paolo Fresu - Heartland (Nemo, 2001)

Rufus Harley - King / Queens (Atlantic, 1970)
Rufus Harley
King / Queens
LP Atlantic SD-1539 (USA, 1970)
01. Eight Miles High
02. Moon River
03. Love is Blue
04. Windy
05. King
06. Queens
Note : Rufus Harley, bagpipes; Richard Tee, piano; Eric Gale, guitar; Charles Rainey, bass; Jimmy Johnson, drums; Montego Joe, conga drum; Nadi Qamar, mamalukembia & Madagascar harp.
There have been arguments regarding whether Rufus Harley meant some of the tracks on Kings & Queens to be humorous. Whether intended that way or not, the average listener reacts to his bagpipe version of the Byrds' "Eight Miles High" first with incredulity and then with guffaws. The same is true of the versions of "Love Is Blue" and especially "Windy," a lightweight pop tune that certainly has a unique sound when played on bagpipes fronting a blues band. On repeated listenings, one develops a sense of respect for the amazing skill that makes these cuts as listenable as they are. If they gave Grammys for inventiveness and sheer audacity, Harley would have a closetful. His version of "Moon River" is astonishingly effective despite the fact that the five-note octave of the bagpipe would seem to make this tune impossible for that instrument. If the whole album was made of pop tunes, this would be a novelty album to surpass all others, albeit one that wouldn't get played very often. What makes the album demand repeated play are the other two compositions, which are Harley's own. "Kings" is an extended duet for bagpipe and marimba — not instruments one thinks of combining as a usual thing, but it's probably obvious by now that Harley thinks way outside the box. The two instruments create an instrumental dialogue that is very similar to an Indian raga, each playing various parts of a theme, sometimes relating to each other in ways that don't connect in any formal way but that work. "Queens," the closing track, is another duet for what sounds like Japanese koto and Scottish bagpipes. This piece is more meditative, with long passages in which one instrument develops an idea while the other accents it or plays a countertheme. These two extended tracks remind the listener that, while Rufus Harley may have played pop tunes on the first half of the album, his roots are in jazz — and when he sets his mind to it, he plays jazz that can't be mistaken for anyone else.

Rufus Harley - Re-Creation of the Gods (Ankh, 1972)

01. Re-Creation of the Gods
02. Nobody Knows the Trouble We've Seen

06. Etymology
Note : Rufus Harley, bagpipes, sax, vocals; Bill Mason, organ; Larry Langston, percussion; Larry Randolph, bass. Recorded august 10, 1967.
This is bagpiper Rufus Harley's finest moment. All the songs on this disc were written by the man himself. All are loosely related in an Eastern spiritual vein, and the man plays them like he means it, like his own offering to God. Contemporaries like Pharoah Sanders or Archie Shepp had introduced a lot of Middle Eastern instruments to jazz listeners. Heard in that context, the hissing overtones of the bagpipes really aren't all that jarring. This record would have fit nicely among the offerings from such labels as Strata East or BYG. Harley hits a real Coltrane-ish vibe here. Unlike most of his other records, you don't find yourself wishing it would stop or at least get quieter. Harley had learned to modulate his tone by this point. Instead of a simple frontal audio assault, there's real dynamism here. Instead of a record that's valued mostly for its freak show vibe, this is a real jazz record, with real worth.

Solo

02. Rappel
Note : Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark, contrebasse.
Live at the Theatre des Halles d'Avignon, august 9th 1994.

Nils Petter Molvaer - Baboon Moon (Columbia, 2011)

Note : Personnel: Nils Petter Molvær: electric and acoustic trumpet, voices, loops, bass synth; Stian Westerhus: electric and acoustic guitars, baritone guitars, analogue synth, hand percussion, takezither, Studer A80, Atari MX50508, harmonium, Roland RE-201, Hiwatt tape echo, vocals, prepared upright piano, Bedwin pianoframe, too many pedals; Erland Dahlen: drums, log drum, steel drum, metal percussion, singing saw vocal, harmonium, bells, candybox shaker; Susanne Sundler: vocals.
Beyond the obvious touchstones of trumpet, guitar and drums, there's so much unidentifiable sound here that it's nearly impossible to know who is doing what. Molvær's singing into his trumpet microphone is hard to discern, so processed and, at times, looped is it that it bears little resemblance to the human voice. But that's part of the magic of Baboon Moon, an album that challenges every preconception of sound as Molvær delivers yet another career-defining album of improv-heavy, at times hardcore at other times obliquely beautiful music that may stem from many sources, but ultimately exists in a space all its own.

Connie Francis - Sings Bacharach and David (MGM, 1968)
Connie Francis
Sings Bacharach and David
LP MGM 4585 (USA, 1968)
01. What the World Needs Now
02. Promises Promises
03. The Look of Love
04. Do You Know the Way to San Jose
05. Trains and Boats and Planes
06. Make It Easy on Yourself
07. Alfie
08. This Girl's in Love with You / I Say a Little Prayer
09. Wanting Things
10. Walk on by
11. Magic Moments / Blue on Blue
12. Don't Make Me Over
Note : Far and away Connie Francis' hippest, most rewarding LP, Sings Bacharach and David pairs the singer with arranger Claus Ogerman, whose interpretations of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David songbook augment the melodies' jazz-like intricacies to create a series of subdued, richly textured settings that perfectly complement Francis' uncharacteristic vocal restraint. Ogerman's nuanced string arrangements are worthy of Bacharach himself, eloquently conveying the style and sophistication that make these familiar songs so timeless. And while she's no Dionne or Dusty, Francis clearly grasps the substance of David's lyrics, investing readings of "Make It Easy on Yourself," "I Say a Little Prayer," and "Walk on By" with genuine poignancy. An unexpected delight.

Jacques Thollot - Watch Devil Go (Palm, 1975)

Moondog - Pastoral Suite & Surf Session (SMC Pro Arte, 1953)
Surf musique pastorale? Avec Moondog, tout est possible!

Moondog - A New Sound of an Old Instrument (Kopf, 1979)

Note : "The organ has not been called the "King of Instruments" for nothing, because of all instruments it has the widestrange of possibilities lending itself to any mood or style. In suffering the organ to emit secular and even profane music, namey dance music, I do not find it out of place, since I am fully aware of the organ´s pagan beginnings, the pipes of Pan.
The organ is capable of producing a percussive quality, provided the notes are played staccato, and more importantly, if the "spitting" flute stop is used. This stop is also known as "chiff", having almost the jazz sound of saxophones playing staccato. Especially in a large room with good accoustics. I think an organ can do anything a jazz band can do, as good, if not better. Moreover, when it comes to long, sustained contrapuntal lines, the organ is unapproachable. The organ sounds good with or without percussion. I added percussion to most of the pieces, which are in the dance idiom." (Moondog)
