Aaron Martin & Justin Wright - Light Poured out of our Bones (Preservation, 2011)

Aaron Martin a déjà signé quelques disques de folk ambient intéressants pour Uder the Spire ou Preservation - déjà. Justin Wright est surtout connu pour son projet space-rock Expo 70, aux sorties multiples à juste titre postées en quantité sur la blogosphère. Dans cette collaboration, Martin apporte certainement sa personnalité, mais j'y entends surtout le psychédélisme space typique d'Expo 70, que j'ai déjà entendu plus inspiré par ailleurs. Aux premières écoutes je n'accroche pas, mais je vais quand même donner du temps à cet album. Avec le net, on peut télécharger 20 albums par jour, auxquels on jette une oreille distraite - à condition déjà d'avoir dézippé les fichiers. On en oublierait qu'un album ne se dévoile pas toujours entièrement dès la première écoute, et que non la musique n'est pas un banal produit de consommation. Il ne me reste qu'à prendre le temps de trouver - ou pas - la clé pour entrer dans ce disque.

Aaron Martin is a multi-instrumentalist who has previously recorded three acclaimed albums on Preservation; Almond. River Water and Chautauqua. He has developed an idiosyncratic, singular and engaging style with his electro-acoustic compositions tracing an arc for a new kind of Americana steeped in cinematic ambience and alien wonder.
Justin Wright is better known as Expo 70. As Expo 70, Wright has a long string of recordings dedicated to pursuing extended meditations for solo guitar that draw upon krautrock, drone and space exploration.
In blooding their collaboration on tape recording Light Poured Out Of Our Bones at Wright’s home studio in Kansas City, Missouri, Martin and Wright combine for a work set deep with epic, foreboding resonance. Angling between wired and taut guitar serrations and slithering, loping synth textures mingling with cello, organ, banjo, singing bowls and voice, these pieces trip out on their own psychedelic reverie with a dark kind of ecstasy.
Compelling and hypnotic, this is music conjuring strange dream sensations to wholly succumb to. (Preservation)
