Tim and Sam - Summer Solstice (Static Caravan, 2009)

Ah, Static Caravan!

There’s something inescapable about the weather and the seasons, not only in a very real sense but also as a theme in music. Vivaldi knew it, and there’s a lineage which can be traced through to contemporary pop. Of course, if there’s one time of year which has always captured the imaginations of songwriters more than any other, it’s the summer months and dreams of surfing, sunshine and blissful solitude.
From new Static Brothers and Sisters, Tim and Sam’s Tim and the Sam Band, Summer Solstice is the latest single to be released by this Manchester-based post-folk act. The three tracks included here are a comfort blanket of twisting Brit-folk, loping and warm with a melancholy undercurrent. Despite its title, there are undoubtedly traces of autumnal moods on this follow-up to their debut EP, released on Full of Joy Records.
With its rustic tones and enchanting melody, swept along by strings and pulsating drums, the lead track is a folk-pop tour de force, its plaintive piano delicately contrasting with the vibrant feel which prevails. It’s followed by the comparatively hushed Rolling Hills which shimmers like a lullaby, adding a glockenspiel to the bewitching layers of instrumentation. It’s a wonderful concoction which drifts effortlessly on the summer breeze, and recalls Sufjan Stevens in its spine-tingling simplicity. (Static Caravan)

Ellis Island Sound - Gene Pool (Static Caravan, 2006)

Ellis Island Sound - Home Service (Static Caravan, 2003)

Ellis Island Sound - #7 Goes East (Static Caravan, 2000)

Modified Toy Orchestra - New Sounds From Old Circuits (Static Caravan, 2002)

Beth Jeans Houghton - Hot Toast Volume One (Static Caravan, 2009)

Table - Songs you Can Sing (Static Caravan, 2009)

Table
Songs You Can Sing
7'' Static Caravan VAN202 / Humble Soul HS304 (UK, 12-2009)

a1. Songs You Can Sing
b1. Most

Ce qu'en disait le label :
Manchester-based six-piece Table are led by songwriter David O’Dowda, who combs together different strands of modern folk music to create something new and wonderful on this, their first seven-inch titled ‘Songs You Can Sing’. A record so strong it takes two decent labels, Humble Soul and Static Caravan to give it the full time partner it requires.
The two tracks on this single are sumptuous delights, airy and ornate while being oddly familiar. Marshalled by David, Table waltz through quietly elegant folk-pop with minimal guitar, stately piano and low-key vocals on what sounds like an endearingly sweet single, despite the deceptively barbed tale woven throughout.

Danny Norbury - Dusk (Static Caravan, 2007)

Touchant!

Hannah Peel - Rebox (Static Caravan, 2010)

Hannah Peel
Rebox
7'' Static Caravan VAN 209 (UK, 2010)

a1. Sugar Hiccup (Cocteau Twins)
a2. Electricity (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark)
b1. Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)
b2. Blue Monday (New Order)

Ce qu'en disait le label :
Hailing from Liverpool, Hannah takes the delicate sounds of music boxes and a raft of other instruments to concoct gently enchanting suites which seem to meld the repeated melody patterns of Steve Reich and the twinkling poise of Colleen. Re-Boxed is simply beguiling in reassessing a handful of iconic 1980s pop songs, providing a unique twist on those synth-pop vignettes and lacing them with a swelling beauty and sense of melancholy.
Carefully crafted, these four songs are touchingly reinvigorated and presented here as beautiful and intricately textured compositions in their own right. Though these songs are inextricably linked with a particular period, they’re shaped and performed in a way which divorces them from any specific time.
