RE-UP : Wingdisk - Time Is Running Out (Isonauta, 2004)
Ben oui!

Time Is Running Out
10'' Isonauta ISO020 (France, 2004)
a1. Rio
a2. Kuro Tamago
b1. Departure Lounge
b2. Tachibana Lament
Note : This record includes singing, temple bells, old people wailing, guitars, cicadas, trains, piano, Mark Tranmer and Ian Masters. Recorded on hot days sometime between 2000 and 2002 in Manchester, London and Osaka.
Wingdisk is a duo comprised of former members of Pale Saints and the Montgolfier Brothers, and anyone familiar with those bands wouldn't be too surprised at the sound and tone of this EP. Very pretty, haunted songs are sequenced with the shorter bits to make two whole pieces, one for each side of the vinyl. Like with ex-Montgolfier Brother Mark Tranmer's previous duo, these songs have the quality of a soundtrack, subtle enough to work as mood music for some bittersweet scene of people doing stuff and saying things yet more than just aural wallpaper. There is something defiant in the unwillingness of the music to be too demonstrative, which would be noble but boring if it wasn't so captivating.
The quiet bossa-nova inspired "Rio" is, if anything, too brief, introducing a lovely chord progression outlined by Spanish guitars, piano, and a cyclical phrase played on what sounds like a backwards marimba or xylophone. It builds to the seven-word vocal - "Why don't we go back to Rio?" - only to fade out again. Drifting like motes of dust in a sunbeam, it passes away before becoming anything more, but it is very beguiling. Is it pop? Yeah, but it's too impressionistic to be just that.

Roland P. Young - Istet Serenade (EM Records, 2009)

03. Dearest
04. Wetness
05. Eclipse
06. Night Air
07. Airlessly
08. Dessert Cave
09. Chrome
10. Tea Bells
Note : 30 years since “Isophonic Boogie Woogie”, Em Records proudly presents Roland P. Young’s “Istet Serenade” – his first original material in as many years.
A foray into the area of music space that represents the core of Roland?s sound philosophy, ‘Isophonics’. The theory of composed improvisation of stillness in the fluidity of constant change. The thingness of actualized sound in the nothingness of acoustic evaporation and recreation from the source of the indwelling presence. This occurs at a speed which defies conscious comprehension but which reveals abundant spiritual revelatory aspects.
To quote mr Young: “The 10 pieces were chosen from 55 comprovisations created over the past year. My Travels to and playing in the atmospheres of Israel, Prague, Rome, London, Paris, Istanbul and Santa Fe, New Mexico combined with my formative years in Kansas City, Missouri then my years in the Bay Area of Northern California and my current residence in Brooklyn, New York inform my music with ever expanding inspirations and creative possibilities.”
This is a sound that is thusly described as spaced acid drones of intense acoustic chill, embracing electronic, ambient, world, avant garde, cosmic, free and chamber jazz music.

Alan Licht - The Evan Dando of Noise? (Corpus Hermeticum, 1997)

02. Ambulance Chaser
03. West Twenty
04. Lonesome Valley
05. For Jojo
06. Untitled
Ce qu'en disait le label :
Five blasts of Licht, from the excoriating to the spiritually uplifting. Mr Licht should need no introduction, this is minimalist mantra music for the end of the millennium. (Corpus Hermeticum)
Note : If the hilarious title is any indication, one would wonder if the former Run On guitarist's experimental music is savvy, inconsistent, elusive, and charming like that of the Lemonheads singer who is butt of the joke. The New Zealand noise label Corpus Hermenticum found a kinship with the New York noise king and released this collection of obtuse feedback experiments with accompanying pop musicology dossier on an unsuspecting and all too serious avant-garde music audience in the late '90s. Containing a series of somewhat humorous experiments, this CD documents some of the most thrilling divulgences into noise experimentation that the improviser released post his tenure in the legendary noise group Blue Humans. Throughout a rock sensibility prevails, and solo noise guitar dominates the album aside from a beautiful pipe organ and bass clarinet drone that touches on minimalism. Another great moment of lo-fi mayhem is "Lonesome Valley" where a tape recording of a South Carolina hollering contest is turned into a post-experimental sonic drama.

CD Rectangle Rec-AL2 (France, 11-2002)

04. 20.
Note : Recorded and mixed on June 28th, 2001 at Auditorium de Saint-Ouen, Saint-Ouen, France.
The third and final installment in a trilogy of solo albums, this Joseph explores a similar path as Alike Joseph and Simple Joseph, but it reaches a new level of purity and beauty. Noel Akchote is credited for guitar and amplifier. He works with feedback, producing delicate, sustained tones by gently touching the strings or flipping pickup switches. The sounds never get aggressive; on the contrary, the guitarist struggles to keep things quiet and pleasurable -- even though that last word may seem a bit odd. In "20" -- the four tracks are titled "17" through "20," but they don't add up with the tracks on the previous albums (four each) -- things get louder and noisier, but the first three pieces stand as little gems of control. "17," for instance, exerts quite a fascination on the listener, its delicate tones ringing endlessly, the guitarist exploring the rich possibilities of very limited gestures, even putting together a beat from the flipping of switches and foot pedals. The Joseph series is quite different from Akchote's work in improvising groups or rock/jazz outfits (see the Recyclers or his work with Katerine). Expect music that has more to do with sound art and the placement of a sound event in space and time than with something associated to the guitar. (François Couture, All Music Guide)

Shelley, O'Rourke, Moore, Ranaldo - Melbourne Direct (Saucerlike, 2006)
Voyons...

Hazard - Wood (Ash International, 2000)

Hazard - Wind (Ash International, 2001)

Note : Recorded and mixed at Stockholm 2000-2001.
Original recordings made in the USA, Canada, UK and Sweden.
This is the fourth, and the most peaceful and beautiful release to date, by Hazard (aka Benny Jonas Nilsen). The artist's intent was to record an album that would blend technology with nature. He had already recorded some weather sounds in Canada, the U.S.A., and Sweden, but lacked the professional equipment necessary to capture raw wind in all its glory. He turned to Chris Watson (of the Touch label), who had just prepared a radio program about wind for the BBC. Using Watson's unaltered recordings, his own weather tapes (thunderstorms, wind in branches, etc.), and delicate electronic floorings, he created eight pieces. Wind deserves to be listened to attentively with headphones, otherwise the music will go by unnoticed. Each track develops an environment where the distinction between the natural and the artificial often becomes irrelevant. A faint pulse may occasionally arise, but it is not imposed as an alternative to nature's chaotic order. "Stream" unfolds cinematically through a succession of sound layers. A storm is preparing to strike in "Village": the listener can feel the tension and the pressure. During "Anemo," the longest track at 12 minutes, time simply stands still. The experimental electronica crowd will probably think this Hazard project lacks glitches and laptop tricks. Others will find in Wind a mind-expanding listening and meditative experience. Recommended. (François Couture, All Music Guide)

Michael Prime - Requiem (Die Stadt, 2002)

Andreas Bertilsson - Paramount (Komplott, 2007)

01. Movement 1 (Plains of the Buffalo)
02. Movement 2 (Riding the Beast)
03. Movement 3 (A Moth to the Flame)
Note : In the early morning of September 16th 2006 I rapidly left the country house where I was staying to finish the production of Paramount. It was the culmination of several months work.
I began outlining the album in the fall of 2005 with the objective of describing society and the present while still trying to anchor it to something timeless and continuous that could be linked to any one period in time. Based on a linear schedule of events I then stipulated rules and guidelines for my musical process.
The following months were cursed with severe computer breakdowns which delayed the development of my musical tools. Meanwhile I started working with DAT and devoted the remainder of that spring to work my way through the massive checklist of sound components based on my schedule of events.
In May, I got stuck once again and to be able to continue I was forced to erase large parts of my project that was decelerating the work flow. I abandoned my notes and started working more freely and rapidly along a rough initial topographic sketch, and at the end of the summer the music was almost complete – one comprehensive 30 minute piece.
Early that fall I went out to the countryside to put the final touches to the album. As it turned out, the house where I was staying was haunted, and the spiritual activity increased as the work progressed. Footsteps, doors that suddenly opened, traces of EVP in my recordings and an overall intensed atmosphear affected my appearance in the house. After two weeks I couldn't take it anymore and felt I was about to lose my mind. I packed my equipment and fled. The album was finally finished in Malmoe shortly thereafter, as far as I know without any interference from the spiritual world.
- Andreas Bertilsson, February 2007.

E. Jugend - Last Exit Wedding (Taping Desk O-phon Mania, 2007)

Note : E Jugend is a susidiary of German experimentalists Ma Chérie For Painting and Baja and thus the concentrate of something particularly heavy (without being heavy metal).
Erratic. Sucking material without growing into a constant state. "Do you think they thought we knackered them?" Maybe then, at the Technical University festival (including beermug throwing) in times of experienced change of climate. Just like walking barefoot on hot concrete. With a wide grin. Tap-dancin´ on carribean instruments. And in one moment it all dissolves into - nothingness.
Stravinsky, Steve Reich, Sonic Youth, Gas, Godard. Quasi Rubber Soul without Exile On Main Street as basic to do music together. One-take. Or rather: live. Inbetween two acoustic guitars and laptop (featuring strawberry cake in springtime) on the one hand and successful battles of material while supporting 5-piece-bands on the other.
"These are people that, for sure, don´t live behind the woods."
"e jugend reminds me of cooking sessions"
"They sound like Pink Floyd after having played for three hours."
Music like a colliding accident. Field recording disposal this time from Dominican Republic via Kuala Lumpur, Venice, Pula, Stuttgart. Since 1998 e jugend have been no.5 and no.9. Happy to be here. As simple as that.

Chris Watson - El Tren Fantasma, The Signal Man's Mix (Touch, 2011)

Fennesz - June (Table of the Elements, 2008)

Note : Recorded: 2008 Amannstudios, Vienna.
Table of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the ninth installment in its Guitar Series Vols. 3 & 4. It’s a 12xLP romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music’s most prominent players, including Christian Fennesz.
Table of the Elements says: "Simply put, Christian Fennesz is a pioneer. As much as any artist, he is responsible for establishing the laptop computer as both a compositional tool and concert instrument. Subsuming electro-acoustic strategies into a bedrock of pop, he terraforms vast new worlds of sound, within which both AMM and the Beach Boys can cozily coexist. His Guitar Series contribution, June, is a suitably lush transformation, as electric guitars flow into deep streams of sound."

Kodama - Turning Leaf Migrations (Olde English Spelling Bee, 2008)

02. Side B
Note : Kodama is the ongoing recording project of two well-known visual and sound artists - Hitoshi Kojo and Michael Northam - and this is their first widely available release as a duo. Recorded in various improbable locations whenever they crossed paths over the course of several years and then finally edited and assembled in a cluttered garage in the west side of Indianapolis. There is a decidedly more improvisational feel and crisp psychedelic aura to these recordings when compared to their other work and one can hear the influence of Ghedalia Tazartes in how the various recordings were stitched together. To quote Hitoshi Kojo: We are the spirit of forest. Our howling has been offered to the many goddesses of the valleys. Teething our emptiness they, licking the stars, until white holes appear in our sky through them towards regenerative guides of the tonal-morphic omni-verses. Using found objects to seduce voices from unlikely sources as well as traditional instruments of wind, wires and wood. Kodama weaves between emotional poetry and dynamic forces of noises. The recordings have a strong atmosphere of each location - the top of a mountain in Switzerland, a campground in Ohio, Lofoten Island in Norway, the arctic circle in Finland, Niagara Falls, etc. It includes a lot of the dirts of the raw recordings, but also incredibly beautiful moments such as the session with an owl in a Slovenian forest, an alpine summit singing meditation under the vast galaxy, and an encounter with the small people through strange ritual... - HK.

Jim O'Rourke - Old News #6 (Editions Mego, 2011)

Ilya Monosov - Architectures on Air and Other Works (Elevator Bath, 2005)

06. Architectures on Air
Note : Elevator Bath proudly presents the first full-length CD from Ilya Monosov. Architectures on Air and Other Works is a challenging collection of recordings, perfectly summarizing the various interests of this inventive sound artist. The range of these works is tremendous: From harsh intensity to gorgeous drone to virtual silence, concluding with the deeply affecting title track. Monosov recorded three of the six pieces presented here as solo works, while the other half are collaborations. Two of these collaborative tracks feature conceptual sound artist Civyiu Kkliu (Banned Productions) and the third includes the work of veteran electronic composer Larry Polansky (Frog Peak).
Architectures on Air and Other Works displays the fruits of several years' worth of activity, and though each piece is distinct in concept and execution, the album offers a solid block of organic sound, compelling from beginning to end. Ilya Monosov's sound works have been released by Bremsstrahlung, Eclipse, & Elevator Bath. (Elevator Bath)

William Basinski / Andreas Martin - Untitled (Robot Records, 2003)

Daphne Oram - Electronic Sound Patterns (His Master's Voice, 1962)

"Teachers seeking original material have found this new approach exciting and stimulating in their creative work for music, movement and drama. The Sound patterns are intended for children to enjoy and may lead them into movement of dance-like character, or involve them in imaginative situations. People who are interested in sound production may like to know that these sound patterns were created by Daphne Oram at her Electronic Studio in Kent. By using audio generators, many tape recorders, filters, ring modulators and other electronic devices she built up the tone colours, pitched each of the notes separately, gave them duration and dynamics and finally spliced the notes together to obtain the required rhythms and sequences."
